 Understansing 3D Secure 2.0, Strong Consumer Authentication & PSD2

Cardholder authentication programs such as Visa Secure (formerly Verified by Visa), MasterCard Identity Check (formerly SecureCode) and others, are used widely for eCommerce transactions worldwide, but adoption has lagged a bit in the United States. There are many negative opinions about 3-D Secure programs in the U.S. market and elsewhere due to issues with sales conversion and abandonment in the early years of these programs, but these are related to 3-DS 1.0. 3-D Secure 2.0, also known as EMV3-DS, was designed with these conversion issues and mobile devices in mind, leveraging passive authentication, mobile software development kits (SDKs) and more. Additionally, 3-DS 2.0 meets the two-factor authentication requirements of SCA, or Strong Consumer Authentication, satisfying compliance requirements and mandates in Europe under PSD2 as well as many countries around the globe, from Asia to Latin America. This course discusses these mandates, the evolution of 3-D Secure to version 2.0, and best practices for implementing and using these services to enjoy benefits such as fraud liability coverage, while minimizing potential negative impacts related to abandonment and sales conversion.

3DS 2.0, SCA & PSD2

  • This online training course provides an in-depth discussion on what 3-D Secure Consumer Authentication programs are, how they work, the various parties that are involved, and what has changed with 3-DS 2.0. Mandates and requirements for Strong Consumer Authentication (SCA) are discussed in terms of how they apply in Europe, Australia, as well as Asian, Latin American and African nations, including how 3-DS 2.0 can meet these requirements. Several considerations and best practices for methods of implementing 3-D Secure programs are discussed including key concepts such as Selective Presentment, passive and dynamic authentication.

This course was last updated in April, 2020. It was updated in its entirety and renamed to reflect the evolved consumer authentication programs known as EMV 3DS or 3-DS 2.0, as well as the SCA requirements related to PSD2 in Europe and other mandates around the globe. Updates include new discussions around SCA (Strong Consumer Authentication), 2FA (two-factor authentication) and 3-DS 2.0, as well as new best practice recommendations related to implementing EMV 3DS. 3-DS 2.0 and SCA mandates are discussed including when they do and do not apply in Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa and Latin America. For a merchant starting business, if they know about these training programs it would save them a lot of trouble down the road. Unfortunately many don’t learn about fraud until it is too late.

The training program is fantastic. You don’t have to download anything, it runs quickly and easily right on your web browser. You can pause and go back to write down or review information, play and navigate through the lessons seamlessly.

With my experience I thought I would breeze through the training program with no problem, but I’m finding myself challenged in some aspects and learning things I haven’t seen before.
